Who is Captain Gopichand?
Captain Gopichand Thotakura is a 30-year-old aviator, entrepreneur, and the first Indian civilian to travel to space. As part of Blue Origin’s New Shepard-25 (NS-25) mission, Gopichand made history by becoming only the second Indian citizen after Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma (1984) to venture into space. With a vision to inspire future generations and support sustainable space-tech advancements, he represents a new face of India’s ambitions in global space exploration.

New Delhi, 9th April, 2024: American Aerospace Manufacturer, Blue Origin has unveiled the esteemed six-member crew set to soar on its NS-25 mission, a landmark in space exploration that includes the first civilian Indian astronaut, Captain Gopichand Thotakura. The flight date will be announced soon. This historic voyage not only marks a significant milestone for India but also for global space endeavors. This exploration is India’s first in 40 years, since Rakesh Sharma’s travel to space on Soyuz T-11 in 1984. The other crew includes Mason Angel, Sylvain Chiron, Kenneth L. Hess, Carol Schaller, and former Air Force Captain Ed Dwight. This mission will be the seventh human flight for the New Shepard program and the 25th in its history. As of date, the program has flown 31 humans to the Kármán line.
The voyage involves astronauts carrying postcards to space for Club for the Future, aiming to inspire future generations to pursue STEAM careers. Captain Gopichand Thotakura’s aviation career is marked by extraordinary achievements and a deep commitment to excellence. With a background rooted in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, he embarked on a diverse journey spanning commercial jet flying, bush piloting, aerobatics, and seaplane operations. His passion for flight extends beyond conventional realms, evident in his role as co-founder of Preserve Life Corp, a center for holistic wellness, and as an international medical jet pilot. Captain Gopi’s recent feat includes summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro. As part of Blue Origin’s NS-25 mission, he has joined astronauts in carrying postcards for Club for the Future, inspiring future STEAM professionals.

His tenure as a pioneer in India’s medical air ambulance missions, having flown over 2000 missions, underscores his dedication to serving humanity. Through his vision and expertise, Captain Gopi has not only excelled in his career but also revolutionized emergency medical aviation in the Indian subcontinent, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos in 2000, is dedicated to advancing space exploration. Through the New Shepard Space program, it conducts rigorous flight tests, demonstrating safety and reliability. Beyond suborbital flights, Blue Origin aims to fly astronauts, develop reusable rocket engines, and construct space habitats. As part of the New Shepard’s 25th Mission program, each astronaut carries a postcard to space on behalf of Blue Origin’s foundation, Club for the Future. This initiative provides students with access to space on Blue Origin’s rockets and aims to inspire future generations to pursue careers in STEAM for the benefit of Earth.
